Why When To Have A Baby Is Not Entirely A Matter Of Choice
article
The issue of when to have a baby has never been entirely a matter of choice. For most of human history pregnancy has been something to celebrate immediately after nine months have elapsed since marriage. In those cases where a woman did not fall pregnant it could have meant disaster, as it was for the unfortunate wives of the syphilis ridden King Henry of England.
However, there is evidence that suggests the matter of choice is not as new as it might be thought. Condoms made of fish bladders or animal intestines were apparently used as far back as 3000 BC. Perhaps there is now more scientific contraception and social acceptability than there has ever been before, and this does make the question of choice a reality for many western women.
This is not the case in some parts of the world. There are countries where the population is made up of very young people. This suggests that choice in these countries choice may not be possible. The inhabitants are apparently oblivious of the fact that the Earth will not be able to sustain the human population increase indefinitely. They proceed to procreate and families of more than ten are common.
Age will always be a factor in the decision of when to get pregnant. In the West the age of marriage has risen from twenty-two in 1890 to twenty-six in 2010. If it is assumed that babies follow marriage which is the institution designed for them it would suggest that these ages are the best for procreation, but that it has slowly risen.
Reliable methods of contraception and enhanced career opportunities for girls may be factors that account for decisions to delay falling pregnant. This allows for career opportunities but also invites the risk of infertility and difficulties in falling pregnant.
At least in the First World contraception is now so reliable that the question of not falling pregnant may seem to be entirely a matter of choice. The converse question of when to become pregnant is not nearly so clear-cut. Many unmarried women face the decision alone. Married women may find themselves in disagreement with their husbands. The best case scenario is when parenthood is wisely planned.
More significantly, many young women who have used contraception and advanced their careers through hard work and dedication may find themselves barren when they decide that the time for them to fall pregnant is opportune. Biology, they find, can upset the best laid plans of mice and men.
Despite all the recent advances and changes that have occurred in recent years surrounding the decision of when to have a baby it is a decision that remains intensely personal and individualistic. Like death, birth is a lonely experience and it is a mother who is attendant above all other people to the new spark of life on the planet. Though statistics may boggle the mind and technological innovations alter our lifestyles irrevocably, the messy, bloody experience of motherhood is the thing that keeps us all in touch with our origins.
