FENG SHUI DAYMASTER

4 pillars ba zi strength DayMaster

Day Master ('DM') is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar.

To determine the strength of the DM, we need to examine its:
  1. timeliness,
  2. location,
  3. support.

Timeliness

Timeliness of a DM refers to the season (in terms of China) when you are born. We are referring to Solar Month here. The 5 elements correspond to the seasons, so spring is the season for wood, summer is the season for fire, autumn is the season for metal, and winter is the season for water. Earth corresponds to late summer and in between of 4 seasons.

We rate them by 5 Chinese words: Wang, Xiang, Xiu, Qiu and Si. They can be loosely translated as:
  1. Wang: Timely / Prosperous / Vigorous - means the timely season
  2. Xiang: Ready / Mutually Correspondence - means the timely season will come soon
  3. Xiu: Weak / Rest / Retired - means the timely season has passed
  4. Qiu: Locked / Imprison - means the timely season has long passed
  5. Si: Death - means it is no longer in season.
The above also shown their hierarchy and strength, from strongest to weakest. I would use the Chinese terms from now on.

So, take wood for instant:

Wood is Wang (timely) when it is in its corresponding season - spring. In spring, wood grows flourishingly.

Wood is Xiu (Rest) in summer, as its growing ability has passed its peak and slowing down, depleted.

Wood is in Qiu / Imprisoned in Late Summer, as the growing energy is withering and it is about to die.

Wood is Si /dead in autumn, when it is completely dominated by another element/season.

Wood is Xiang (ready) in winter, its energy is ready to grow and to begin the life cycle again when spring comes. Hence:

E.g. 1

YP: X - X
MP: X - Yin
DP: Jia - X
HP: X - X

Month = Yin (wood) DM = Jia (wood) - spring

Result = Timely and wood is strongest

E.g. 2

YP: X - X
MP: X - Hai
DP: Jia - X
HP: X - X
Month = Hai (water) - winter DM = Jia (wood)
Result = Ready and wood is strong

E.g. 3

YP: X - X
MP: X - Shen
DP: Jia - X
HP: X - X
Month = Shen (metal) - autumn DM = Jia (wood)
Result = Death

E.g. 4

YP: X - X
MP: X - Si
DP: Jia - X
HP: X - X
Month = Si (fire) - summer DM = Jia (wood)
Result = Rest and weak

To conclude on timeliness:

It is timely for the DM, when wood is born in spring season, fire is born in summer, metal is born in autumn, water is born in winter, and earth is born in between 4 seasons (the 4 earth months - Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat)

Actually, it is read as DM having major root in the month branch. The major root of the month branch being the same element as the DM.

In chart, where the major root of the month branch is the same element as the DM, in 80% cases, we can consider the strength of the DM is intensify/vigorous (this is especially so, when the DM is metal, water, wood, and fire, and less likely when the DM is earth, as earth has different minor qi). - This is so, as the relative strength of the individual 5 elements depends on the birth month.

Location (De Di)

This is to see whether the DM has other roots (in the earthly branch) besides the month branch. When a DM has root in other branches (which are not the month branch), we call it De Di. Whenever the DM has root, it has occupied a location/ground thus has more strength. The one with major qi will give more strength than those who give minor qi.

The relative strength on the location of the branch that the DM has root is as follows (from strongest to weak)

At the month branch

At the day branch

At the hour branch

At the year branch

Support (De Shi)

The DM is support by elements of its camp, that is the same element as DM, and the element that generates the DM. E.g. If the DM is water, then metal and water belong to the same camp as the DM. Whereas, wood, fire and earth belong to the other camp, which deplete the DM.

The more and closer the supporting camp is to the DM, the stronger the DM will be. The more and closer the opposing camp is to the DM, the weaker the DM will be. However, we also need to consider the interaction of combinations and clashes among the elements in the 4 pillars to come to a conclusive picture.

The relative strength on the support of the elements that in the supporting camp of the DM is as follows (from strongest to weak)

Element at the month branch that has a (penetrating) stem

Element at the day branch that has a (penetrating) stem

Element at the hour branch that has a (penetrating) stem 4. Element at the year branch that has a (penetrating) stem Note: whenever a element that is at an earthly branch has a stem, we call it 'Tou Gan' - means there is a penetrating stem.
